Soapy Saves Lives Campaign: Calendar

Year of Publication: 2024

The Soapy Saves Lives campaign is an engaging, interactive initiative developed under the Uganda Sanitation for Health Activity (USHA) with technical support from the USAID Social and Behavior Change Activity to promote critical hygiene behaviors among primary school pupils. Centered around the friendly and relatable character Soapy, the campaign focuses on three thematic areas: handwashing with soap, menstrual hygiene management, and proper toilet usage.

The campaign employs a dynamic, child-centered approach to learning, combining fun and education through creative tools like:

  • The Soapy Calendar: A visual guide aligning hygiene activities with key dates and themes.
  • Games: Customized activities such as Soapy Snakes and Ladders and Soapy Tag to reinforce key messages.
  • Coloring Posters: Interactive materials where pupils identify and illustrate good hygiene practices while creating dialogue around proper behaviors.
  • Champion Badges: Rewards that motivate pupils to become hygiene champions in their schools and communities.

Through participatory methods, Soapy Saves Lives encourages active learning, group discussions, and behavior change, empowering pupils to adopt healthy habits and share them with peers and families. By blending education with play, the campaign makes critical hygiene practices accessible, memorable, and fun, contributing to healthier schools and communities.
